A teenager who attacked two men for their beer has been ordered to pay criminal injury compensation to the victims.
Finbarr Duffy and an unidentified accomplice approached the two men as they left a Total petrol station in Bulwell, Nottingham, with an 18-bottle pack of beer and some cough sweets.
Duffy and his accomplice had already attempted to mug a young man who had been with the victims that evening.
They turned their attention to the men with the beer, demanding they hand it over before one of the victims was punched in the face.
Nottingham Crown Court heard that Duffy, 18, punched the other man around the head.
They ran off with 16 bottles of beer and a mobile phone.
Duffy pleaded guilty to two charges of robbery and one charge of attempted robbery. No evidence was provided against his co-accused.
Judge Michael Stokes QC handed down a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered Duffy to carry out 125 hours of community service. He was also placed under the supervision of the Probation Service.
The judge told him he will have to attend a low-intensity alcohol programme.
Duffy must also pay compensation of £500 to his victims – £300 to one man, and £200 to the other.
Judge Stokes told him: “You were under the influence of drink, not for the first time.
“It’s an aggravating feature there were two involved, the time which it occurred and it was in the public street.
“There is too much of this happening.”
However, the judge also acknowledged that Duffy had made changes to his lifestyle since the incident.
He said: “This happened 11 months ago.
“Since then you appear to have demonstrated a complete change of attitude”.
Defence solicitor Balraj Bhatia said in mitigation that his client had tried hard to turn his life around since the attack in January.
He has moved away from the area and is working 45 hours a week earning “good money”.
Mr Bhatia said: “He has turned his life around. He is the happiest he has ever been.”
